Johnny Depp said he would not reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the beloved film series Pirates of the Caribbean.
During the ongoing US$100 million (around Rp1,4 trillion) defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard in a Virginian court, Johnny Depp said “That is true,” when asked by Heard’s lawyer that he would never return to the franchise even if Disney offered to pay him “US$300 million and a million alpacas”.
Depp first played Jack Sparrow in 2003’s Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of Black Pearl, quickly becoming one of the best known Disney characters. Depp, who had worked with Disney on a few other projects including Alice in Wonderland, reprised the pirate role in the next four films.
Depp lost his Pirates contract in 2016 when Amber Heard first accused him of domestic violence. At that time a 6th Pirates film starring Margot Robbie was in development. Depp said despite removing him from the project, Disney never removed his character from theme park rides and still sells Jack Sparrow merchandise.
Depp vs Heard case had also cost him the role as Grindelwald in Harry Potter’s prequel Fantastic Beast series.
