Hwang Dong-Hyuk, director of the top-rated Korean series 'Squid Game', stated that he didn't want to rush into working on season 2.
Hwang Dong-hyuk said it took him ten years to prepare the Squid Game series. Hwang has planned the survival drama since 2008 and was inspired by comics about many people falling into extreme games. But he could not make it earlier because of a view that the content was too bizarre, the director told The Korea Economic Daily in an online interview on Sept. 28.
“In my earlier days, I’d drink half a bottle of soju (Korean liquor) to get the creative juices flowing. I can’t do that anymore,” Hwang said to Variety.
“Writing ‘Squid Game’ was harder than normal for me as it was a series, not a film. It took me six months to write and rewrite the first two episodes. Then I consulted verbally with friends and picked up clues for improvements through my pitching and from their responses.” Hwang added to Variety.
Producing the show was an intense experience. Apart from drinking soju to get the creative idea, Hwang also lost six teeth while filming because of stress. However, it hasn't completely put him off the idea of making a second season, according to edition.cnn.com.
“I don’t have well-developed plans for ‘Squid Game 2.’ It is quite tiring just thinking about it. But if I were to do it, I would certainly not do it alone. I’d consider using a writers’ room and would want multiple experienced directors,” Hwang said to Variety.
